Kevin Moffett was born and raised in Daytona Beach, Florida. For years, he edited and wrote for Funworld, the official magazine of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions. He interviewed Dolly Parton and Pele, traveled to haunted cornfields in Ohio and near-deserted theme parks in Spain, and rode an unhealthy number of roller coasters. He wrote at length about this for The Believer.

His first collection of stories, Permanent Visitors, won the John Simmons Short Fiction Award, judged by George Saunders, and was long-listed for the Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award. His stories have appeared in The Better of McSweeney's Vol. 2, Tin House, Land-Grant College Review, the Chicago Tribune, New Stories From the South: The Year’s Best, and in three editions of The Best American Short Stories (2006, 2009, and 2010). He has received the Nelson Algren Award, the Pushcart Prize, and a literature fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts.

He won the National Magazine Award in 2010 for “Further Interpretations of Real-Life Events.”

He teaches in the graduate creative writing program at Cal State University, San Bernardino.
